The strongest local journalism starts by listening

A newspaper earns its place in a community by asking better questions and making space for the answers.

Local journalism is a conversation with responsibilities. It should be curious, fair and willing to return to a story when the first answer is incomplete.

Listening means giving people the time to explain, checking what can be checked and being clear about what remains uncertain. A newspaper should make that work visible.

The measure of a local newsroom is not simply how quickly it publishes. It is also whether its readers recognise the questions it asks, trust the care it takes and know how to challenge it when it gets something wrong.
